How Ring Size Is Measured
In the US, ring sizes follow a numbered scale based on the inside circumference of the band. Each whole size adds roughly 2.5 mm to that circumference, with half sizes in between. The UK uses letters and much of Europe uses the circumference in millimeters, so a ring bought abroad may need its size converted.
Why Your Dominant Hand Measures Larger
The ring finger on your dominant hand is often about half a size larger than the same finger on the other hand. Engagement rings and wedding bands are usually worn on the left ring finger, so that is the finger to measure.
Average Ring Sizes
Many jewelry stores stock sample rings around size 6 for women and size 10 for men, close to common averages. Your own size can easily differ, so it is worth being measured before you buy.
How to Find Your Partner's Ring Size Secretly
- Borrow a ring they already wear on their ring finger and bring it in, and we can measure it.
- Ask a close friend or family member who may know their size.
- If you have to guess, lean slightly larger: sizing a ring down is usually simpler than sizing it up.
If you would rather be sure, bring your partner in for a fitting. It may spoil the surprise, but they may enjoy planning the next chapter together.
Ring Sizing vs. Ring Resizing
Ring sizing tells you what size you wear. Resizing changes the size of a ring you already own: a jeweler removes or adds a small piece of metal at the bottom of the band and solders it so the change is invisible.
